NAME: Aaron Pettifer

FAVOURITE MOVEMENT OR WORKOUT: Deadlifts and Olympic lifting movements.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 10 WORDS OR LESS: Relaxed, driven, competitive, addicted to sport, golfer, scotch, musician and music enthusiast.
WHY DID YOU START TRAINING AT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST? After being forced into football retirement after my fourth knee surgery, I had been advised to maintain my conditioning or have arthritis/shiny titanium knee around the age of 30. My normal gym helped with this but I missed the competitive nature of football and the true mental aspect of sport. Joining crossfit hawthorn has vastly improved my conditioning while letting me compete against a great adversary, the limitations of my own mind and body.
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Finally getting 100kg clean and jerk movement after a month of staring at the bar and failing.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST? Everybody is encouraging and supports each other, whatever the workout. Different abilities or fitness are irrelevant as everybody is battling themselves. The feeling after a brutal workout knowing that everybody else all feels the same pain is oddly reassuring, so it makes coming back and struggling again not as overwhelming.
WHAT IS THE MAIN HEALTH GOAL YOU ARE FOCUSING ON AT THE MOMENT? Tidying up technical problems while trying to steadily improve muscular endurance.
ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING THEIR CROSSFIT JOURNEY? Take it slow, trust the coaches, and be prepared to encounter exercises that you will not be good at for a while! The challenge and enjoyment is building up your muscle foundations and techniques and then getting that exercise down!!!!
TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU: I decided to be an Engineer over pursuing a career as a Concert Pianist. At the time it took them a while to adjust to my long surfer hair (it wasn’t a mullet I swear!) and thongs while playing on stage!
APART FROM CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST, WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUTS IN THE HAWTHORN, CAMBERWELL OR BOROONDARA AREA?
I have been known to frequent places that serve ales…often… but also one of the numerous lunch/dinner places.
