Building a community of fun, friendly and supportive members is important to us at CrossFit Hawthorn East.  We’re not only helping the Camberwell and Hawthorn locals get fitter, faster and stronger – our coaches and community are there to motivate and encourage our members every step of the way. Our gym is filled with friends from all around the Boroondara area to focus on their health and fitness goals.

Every day we workout with inspiring individuals. Each week we share their stories with you. Meet Stacey:

Name: Stacey Mason

Age: ouch… Can I say mid 30’s and we call it even? (35) 

Occupation: Head of Corporate Brand & Marketing at Viva Energy Australia 

Started training at CFHE:
Not quite sure! Started back when whiteboards really were whiteboards and wodify was just a myth. Took a bit of a hiatus and came back about two years ago. Been pretty consistent from there. Think I might be one of the longest, oldest members – in both age and tenure. 

Favourite movement or workout:
I enjoy pull ups and back squats. Love a good Hero WOD and Metcon – anything that leaves me sore and dead tired. I think mentally it makes me feel like I really have worked out. 

Describe yourself in 10 words or less:
Energetic, Fanatical (especially with Hawthorn), Dedicated, Loving, Driven, Social, Positive, Creative, Organised, Tenacious

Why did you start training at CrossFit Hawthorn East?
I was bored doing my bootcamp, felt I had plateaued with my fitness level and wanted a change and step it up a level.  

What’s your biggest achievement so far?
Hmm unsure, pretty stoked with my deadlift 1rm of 110kgs. If I could manage a handstand push up I think my career at Crossfit would be complete.

What do you love about CrossFit Hawthorn East?
The people there are awesome. I have made some great girlfriends and it’s hard missing a workout if I know they are going to be there. I love the overall feel of the place, competitive if you want to, but not ego driven. It’s just got a cool vibe, and the the people including coaches are a big part of that. Everyone is there to help you out and support you during training. 

What is the main health goal you are focusing on at the moment?
Listening to my body, even if that means reducing my high intensity training and doing more yoga or weight lifting in open gym versus all metcons. It’s a hard transition and I struggle mentally on my rest days and or with with my reduced program, but I think it’s important as I get older (insert sad face) to pull back when I need to.  

Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey?
It is addictive! When I first started I was warned about crossing into the dark side – but it is worth it! You see results, quickly and it’s very easy to want to push yourself harder and keep going. Make sure you listen to your body, your coaches and look at your technique versus what others are doing around you so you can get the best out of it. Take your rest days and even limit yourself to a number of sessions per week, and add in yoga or some yin training on the other days. Or just embrace it and find a friend to constantly talk about it and train with! 

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
Hmmm… I am the oldest of 6 kids, have had my ears pinned back and was in a Barbie TV commercial… 

Apart from CrossFit Hawthorn East, where are your favourite hangouts in the Hawthorn, Camberwell or Boroondara area?
Punto Cafe (great coffee), Kula Yoga, Lululemon (addicted) – there are actually heaps of cool new cafes or restaurants in the area which make for perfect post WOD coffee or drinks catch ups.
