Building a community of fun, friendly and supportive members is important to us at CrossFit Hawthorn East.  We’re not only helping the Camberwell and Hawthorn locals get fitter, faster and stronger – our coaches and community are there to motivate and encourage our members every step of the way. Our gym is filled with friends from all around the Boroondara area to focus on their health and fitness goals.

Every day we workout with inspiring individuals. Each week we share their stories with you. Meet Eddie:

Name:  Edwina Oostergetel (or Ed or Eddie – not Eddy!)

Age: 34

Occupation: Business Analyst and Project Manager for an Accounting Firm – it sounds really boring and geeky and it is – but I like it.

Started training at CFHE:  About 2 years ago

Favourite movement or workout:
Med ball slams, I don’t know why, but I am really fast at them.  Also the split jerk, if i don’t lose my nerve.

Describe yourself in 10 words or less:
Aloof, maybe misunderstood until you get to know me.

Why did you start training at CrossFit Hawthorn East?
Because I couldn’t climb a rope at school and the teacher yelled at me – it has been a permanent emotional  scar from my childhood – not that I hold grudges or anything.

What’s your biggest achievement so far?
Climbing a rope to the top – take that Mrs Orr!

What do you love about CrossFit Hawthorn East?
That sometimes I don’t want to go to a workout, but because of the people and the environment, I always leave the gym feeling better than when I walked in – that is why I keep coming back.

What is the main health goal you are focusing on at the moment?
Consistency and patience.  Slow and steady wins the race, that is what I am working on in my fitness, my health and diet and my attitude to life in general.

Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey? 
The scariest part is walking in the door the first time.  It gets easier after that.  And just focus on what you can do and the improvements that you are making in your own time.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I got approached by a pro golf coach to take a year off and he would coach me to try and become a professional golfer.  Can someone remind me why I said no? 

Apart from CrossFit Hawthorn East, where are your favourite hangouts in the Hawthorn, Camberwell or Boroondara area?
The Counter for their coffee, The Geebung (I mean the Auburn) for the beer garden that is dog friendly and Hawthorn Hockey Club where the beers are really cheap, I watch hockey in the sun and there is always good stuff in the lost property bin.
