Consistent Training:  The key for fitness progress and success

You decide that you need to lose weight, tone up, get stronger, increase fitness or get faster – whatever your reason, you decide to join a gym.

You find CrossFit Hawthorn East – it looks like a fun way to get fitter, faster and stronger so you sign up and start training.

You’re working out sporadically, or perhaps a couple of times a week. You like the atmosphere, the community and the feeling you’re left with after you complete a workout.

After a few months maybe some movements are frustrating you. Maybe you can’t quite master the technique. Maybe you’d like to load the barbell a bit more, to reach the RX weight, but can’t go that heavy yet.

What could be the reason you’re not achieving your goals? Consistency.

The number of times we step into the gym per week is key.  We need to come into the box consistently to get exposure to a range of movements – to give our brains and bodies a chance to learn and progress.

EMBRACE VARIETY

Variety is what keeps CrossFit fun – there’s always a new skill to learn, weaknesses to improve and strengths to get stronger.  However, the variety in the programming means you need to be coming in consistently to get exposure to the full range of movements.  We recommend hitting 3 – 5 WODs every week to benefit from our modalities of Endurance, Olympic Weightlifting and Gymnastics / Body Weight exercises.

If you skip workouts because you don’t ‘like’ a movement, or it’s a weakness – you’re cheating yourself from improving and progressing with your training. Embrace the variety in the programming, challenge yourself to come in regardless of what the WOD is.  You can scale as much as you need to, listen to your body, but come in and do the workout.

NEURAL PATHWAYS

When you workout your brain sends signals to your body to make it move. When a complicated exercise is presented to your brain, it can take time for the neural pathway to develop. What does this mean for your training? It’s a case of practice makes perfect.  You need to repeat movements to strengthen your neural pathways, for your brain to understand what the body needs to do and to send the right messages. When it all starts to fall into place your technique will be smoother.

This means coming into workouts with a positive mindset. If you find a movement challenging, that’s OK. Listen to your coach’s cues and guidance, focus on your alignment.  Consistency will help you to improve your neural pathways and technique.

STAY MOTIVATED

We have an awesome, supportive community and dedicated coaches to help you stay on track with your training. If your motivation starts to waver, let us know.

  • If you are feeling tired, maybe you need to check your nutrition or hydration, or schedule in your rest days. Consistent rest days for recovery are just as important as consistent training days.
  • If you are feeling frustrated, maybe we can help give you some pointers on your technique, or a PT session to help you progress.
  • If you are feeling intimidated by the workouts, or even your WOD buddies, maybe we can set up a time to chat about your goals and direction to give you confidence.

We want to help you all reach your health goals. To do that we need to see you at the box. We need you to train consistently, and with integrity, to get the benefits from the programming. And we want you to have fun doing it!

Get in touch if we can help you bring more consistency into your training.

See you at the box, Coach Daz
