Building a community of fun, friendly and supportive members is important to us at CrossFit Hawthorn East. We’re not only helping the Camberwell and Hawthorn locals get fitter, faster and stronger – our coaches and community are there to motivate and encourage our members every step of the way. Our gym is filled with friends from all around the Boroondara area to focus on their health and fitness goals.

NAME: Alicen Coddington
AGE: 26 (but 27 is fast approaching)!
OCCUPATION: Lecturer and PhD Candidate at Swinburne University

umm… introvert, prickly but once you get past the prickles I like to think that I am reasonably tolerable!
WHY DID YOU START TRAINING AT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST?
I needed to find a training option that would counteract my love of food.
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
Doing a handstand against the wall. I was incapable of doing handstands and cartwheels as a child and was basically kicked out of gymnastics class as it didn’t look like I was going to achieve them anytime soon. So now I do an inner victory dance ever time I manage to do a handstand. And the day I get a free-standing handstand, just watch out!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST?
The WODs scare me enough that I keep wanting to come back to see if I can complete them without wishing I was dead. Also, the people, the CrossFit Hawthorn East people are lovely. Being an introvert people do overwhelm me at times but, the crew at Hawthorn East are open, approachable, encouraging and just a great group of diverse people.
WHAT IS THE MAIN HEALTH GOAL YOU ARE FOCUSING ON AT THE MOMENT?
Staying healthy. I also eventually want to complete the hero WOD called ‘Small’. Every time it has come up I have chickened out, it has every movement in it that I hate.
ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING THEIR CROSSFIT JOUNEY?
Keep coming back, modify the movements and weights to work for you and don’t compare yourself to anyone else at the box.
