Functional Training Hawthorn – F45 vs CrossFit Hawthorn East

CrossFit was created in 2000 and has exploded to over 12,000 affiliates around the world. It’s popularity is continuing to skyrocket with no signs of slowing down. Why? CrossFit is fun, it’s challenging and it has a big focus on community. Most of all, it gives you results through the combination of weightlifting, gymnastics body weight movements and endurance training. The program is constantly varied so you’re always learning a new skill and getting fitter, faster and stronger.
F45 is new to the fitness scene. The programs are designed on functional fitness and full body workouts. Each group session lasts 45 minutes and cycles through a circuit of exercises. The workouts are based on time rather than having to meet a certain number of reps per exercise. Members are responsible for setting a pace that suits them.
Both CrossFit and F45:

One of the noticeable differences is the lack of Olympic weightlifting movements at F45. As mentioned in Men’s Health magazine, exercise physiologist Dan Williams points to the absence of high-load, low-rep strength training as a gap in the F45 programming.
“I know F45 has marketed itself as having the elements of CrossFit without the more complex lifting, but I think strength training is super important. The more muscle you have, the more functional you are, and the easier it is to maintain weight and avoid chronic conditions.”
His suggestion? “If you do a lot of F45 classes, supplement some strength work in there.”
The beauty of CrossFit is that it incorporates serious strength work. It then weaves in endurance training to tap into your cardiovascular system. And then it throws some gymnastics, body weight movements into the mix. CrossFit is a one stop shop.
CrossFit affiliates are individually owned, rather than F45 who follow a franchise model, which means each gym has the freedom to create a program that suits their particular community.
