Building a community of fun, friendly and supportive members is important to us at CrossFit Hawthorn East.  We’re not only helping the Camberwell and Hawthorn locals get fitter, faster and stronger – our coaches and community are there to motivate and encourage our members every step of the way. Our gym is filled with friends from all around the Boroondara area to focus on their health and fitness goals.

NAME: Kim MacKay

AGE: 36

OCCUPATION: Lawyer

STARTED TRAINING AT CFHE: August 2013

FAVOURITE MOVEMENT OR WORKOUT: Murph (1.6km run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats, 1.6km run) – bacon and eggs taste so much better after that!

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 10 WORDS OR LESS: Allens Party Lollies (full of energy, not much nutritional value)

WHY DID YOU START TRAINING AT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST? After 2 kids, I wanted to tone up but needed something that was quicker than long distance running and more motivating than les mills.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Coming 3rd in Australia in the scaled division of the Crossfit Open this year. I’m a pretty competitive person (understatement of the year…) so putting standard exercises into a competitive format is a winning combination for me.  

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT HAWTHORN EAST? Having so much fun – learning new movements like handstand push ups and toes to bar and laughing with my friends – that the results just come without even realising it. 

WHAT IS THE MAIN HEALTH GOAL YOU ARE FOCUSING ON AT THE MOMENT? For the first time in my adult life, I’m 100% happy with my body. CrossFit has not only improved my physique but also my self image and confidence. My main goal is to maintain a healthy balance – improve fitness without getting fanatical, increase strength without risking injury. 

ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING THEIR CROSSFIT JOUNEY? Just keep going – whether you feel like quitting half way through a workout or pressing the snooze button when your alarm goes off. Every extra rep you do or extra session you make will bring you one step closer to your goal. 

TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU: Probably nothing (I’m pretty open). Uhmm, I was in a Weetbix ad as a kid. I was swimming backstroke but had to let the main actor beat me, it was the hardest acting I ever did.
