Meet Your Coaches

Darren Smith

darren

Darren discovered CrossFit over five years ago when he finally decided it was time to get away from the hugely uninspiring gym routine he had been following for years. The idea of ‘constantly varied, functional movement’ really appealed to him and after his first workout he was hooked!

Darren loves the intensity and challenge each workout brings, not only physically but mentally. He is constantly learning new skills and becoming more ‘in tune’ with his body. CrossFit has not only helped him be in the best shape of his life, but it has also helped him understand the importance of nutrition and wellbeing for a balanced life.

Coaching has been the most rewarding step in Darren’s CrossFit life so far. Helping athletes reach their goals and milestones gives him a fantastic feeling and seeing the smiles on their faces is a huge bonus. He loves how the CrossFit community brings like-minded people together to cheer on and push each other just that little bit further.

Aaron Kerr

After spending years sitting in front of a computer in an office, Aaron reached a point where there was no other option but to change his lifestyle. Having no previous fitness history, he signed up with the Australian Institute of Fitness to become a personal trainer. As soon as he completed his course, he quit his office job and moved into a gym. Two years into working as a personal trainer, Aaron caught a glimpse of the CrossFit Games on a TV at the gym while training a client and was curious. He made his enquiries and joined a local CrossFit gym. Aaron continued to personal train clients for a couple of years, but reserved his own training solely for CrossFit.

Aaron obtained his CrossFit Level 1 certificate and is now coaching full time and hasn’t looked back. He loves everything about CrossFit. The intensity, the constant variations of the workouts, the sometimes nervous feeling you might have before a session and then the end part when everyone is laying on the floor gasping for air.

“I’ve met a lot of amazing people from all walks of life through CrossFit, each with their own level of fitness. I still think it’s amazing that we can all come together for a great workout and push each other until the end. My strength, cardio, flexibility and all round health and fitness have never been better.”

Aaron is spending the next 12 months studying a Diploma of Massage. He hopes to start a small mobile massage business that will help the CrossFit community.

Hamish first encountered CrossFit training in 2010. “It was a Tabata style WOD. I remember it had push ups, box jumps, abmat sit ups, and air squats. It absolutely smashed me!”

Ever since that first experience he wanted more, finally getting the opportunity to become a CrossFit Trainer in June 2013 and joined the team at CrossFit Hawthorn East in July. Kacey Smith

kacey

Kacey loves the ‘routine is the enemy’ approach of CrossFit. She was first introduced to CrossFit by Darren and found that it resonated with her background in competitive gymnastics.

She immediately connected with the strong community environment that CrossFit fosters. Kacey loves seeing those who finish the workout first standing by the rest of the group and cheering them along until everyone is done.

Kacey is a CrossFit Trainer as well as a certified Power Vinyasa, Yin and Hot Yoga teacher and runs CFHE sister company Kula Yoga. She loves sharing the benefits of her two loves – CrossFit and yoga. She believes they work beautifully together to build strength, focus, balance, mobility and flexibility.

Kacey taught yoga mobility sessions at another Melbourne CrossFit affiliate before founding Kula Yoga and later establishing CrossFit Hawthorn East with her husband Darren. Her focus is always on ensuring athletes use correct technique and alignment to move safely while keeping a smile on their faces!

Tristan Barr – Intern

Tristan CrossFit Coach Trainer

Growing up Tristan was always active, in particular discovering a love and talent for touch football. An accomplished player, he was selected at the age of 24 to play for South Australia in the State Cup.

With a natural interest in health and fitness, Tristan trained for many years in a conventional gym where he plugged away at the same routine with little intensity. Ready for a change Tristan signed up to his local CrossFit box, keen to give it a go after hearing about it from friends. Once he completed his one week trial, he was hooked and never looked back!

After training for 18 months, Tristan made the decision to build on his interest in health and fitness and pursue a career in the industry, becoming a Certified Level 1 CrossFit Trainer in June 2014.

Tristan believes that the style of training that CrossFit provides is all encompassing and all-inclusive. “Having functional movement across broad time and modal domains is challenging, yet enjoyable. The encouragement you get from your peers is something I’ve only ever seen in team sports. It’s something that anyone can do. That’s the best thing about it.”

Qualifications

  • Certified CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • First Aid & CPR Certificate
